Cherkessk (Russian: Черке́сск) is the capital city of the Karachay-Cherkess Republic, as well as its political, economic, and cultural center. Population: 116,244 (2002 Census);[1] 113,060 (1989 Census).[2]
History
It was founded in 1804 as Cossack stanitsa Batalpashinskaya, after Batal-Pasha, a Turkish general of Circassian origin, who was defeated in the battle on this territory in 1790. In 1931 it was given a town status and was renamed Batalpashinsk; then Sulimov in 1934, then Yezhovo-Cherkessk in 1937, and finally Cherkessk in 1939.
Ethnic groups
The city is inhabited by native Cherkess (Circassians), Karachays, Russians, Abaza, Nogays and minorities of Greeks and Armenians.
According to 1989 data, the population of the city included:
- Cherkess (35.0%)
- Russians (33.0%)
- Karachays (20.7%)
- Abazins (11.5%)
